Slash your electricity bill with this simple Sunday trick

British Gas customers with smart meters can now get half-price electricity on Sundays.

There are plenty of smart ways to cut energy bills, and lots of great time-of-use deals out there right now. One that caught my eye recently is British Gas’s PeakSave scheme.

If you're a British Gas customer with a smart meter, you could be getting half-price electricity every Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm and sometimes even during extra "Green Flex" hours in the week.

Here’s how it works, and why it might be worth checking if your own supplier offers something similar.

What is PeakSave?

PeakSave is British Gas’s way of rewarding customers for using power when the grid is greener. Every Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm, electricity is half the usual price, about 15p per unit instead of 30p.

They also occasionally run “Green Flex” hours during the week when there’s extra renewable energy, like last Friday’s two-hour window in the afternoon.

What could you save?

British Gas says PeakSave has helped customers collectively save over £24 million, with some households saving over £100 a year just by shifting when they do energy-heavy tasks. Even moving just a few things into the Sunday slot can make a difference.

Do other suppliers offer anything similar?

Yes, and it’s worth checking your own provider:

  • ScottishPower’s Power Saver offers 50% off electricity every Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm, plus bonus weekday hours.
  • Octopus Go gives super-cheap electricity overnight (00:30–05:30) – great for EV charging or running appliances on timers.

These time-based tariffs are becoming more common across the board, especially for smart meter users.

The bottom line

Whether it’s PeakSave or something similar from your own supplier, time-of-use deals are one of the easiest ways to cut bills without changing much at all. Just shifting when you do your washing or charging can make a real difference, to your wallet and the planet.
